Sam's Trail Diary: October

Smarter training, coastal trails, and a marathon PB
October has been a strong and satisfying month — both for racing and for getting smarter with training. After the Harrier x Loughborough University testing we did back in the summer, I’ve been able to apply what I learned in a really practical way. Understanding my zones and how to stay within them has made a huge difference, especially with the training and racing I’ve got lined up over the next few months. It’s given me confidence and structure — and I’m really starting to see the results.
Clarendon Relay Marathon
First up this month was the Clarendon Relay Marathon, where I joined the George & Falcon trail running team. It was such a great day out on the trails — great company, great atmosphere, and a close race that saw us land a podium finish! There’s something special about a team event where everyone gives their all for each other.

Abingdon Marathon
Then came something a bit different — a road marathon. Not my usual terrain, but I decided to take on the Abingdon Marathon, which also hosted the England and Welsh Athletics Masters International races this year. It turned out to be a great decision — I ran a new marathon PB and finished 6th overall in a really competitive field. As a trail runner, to come within a minute or so of the podium on the roads feels like a big win!
Big goals ahead
Outside of racing, I’ve been keeping things varied with some incredible coastal trail runs near Lulworth Cove in Dorset, soaking up the autumn light and sea views. Looking ahead, I’ve got some big training days planned in Wales with Dan Weller, Dave Philips and Mark Darbyshire — building towards my next major goal: the Arc 100 in January.
Here are a couple of photos from an epic 57 km day with 4000 m of elevation — the perfect mix of endurance, climbing and scenery to set up the winter training block.
