What is the Thorpe Baselayer made from?
The Thorpe combines 68% superfine Merino wool (17.5 microns) with 32% TENCEL™ Lyocell. This premium blend delivers natural temperature regulation, moisture management, softness, and durability—without using polyester.
How much does it weigh?
Approx. 200g (Men’s Medium)—light enough to carry, substantial enough for reliable warmth.
Why mix Merino wool with TENCEL™?
The combination outperforms either fiber alone:
-
Moisture control: TENCEL™ wicks sweat up to 3x faster than Merino.
-
Cooling: TENCEL™ provides a natural cooling effect, making the fabric lighter and fresher.
-
Warm when wet: Merino insulates even when damp.
-
Durability: Together they resist pilling and abrasion.
-
Softness: Extra-smooth feel against skin for chafe-free comfort.
-
Eco-friendly: TENCEL™ is sustainably sourced from wood pulp.
How is it different from synthetic or cotton baselayers?
Unlike synthetics, the Thorpe has no plastic feel and doesn’t trap odor. Unlike cotton, it won’t soak, chill you when wet, or cause chafing. You get natural performance, comfort, and sustainability in one layer.
When should I wear the Thorpe Baselayer?
It’s designed for year-round trail use:
-
Wear it solo on cool mornings.
-
Layer it under a tee or mid-layer as temps dip.
-
Pair with a windproof or waterproof shell for maximum protection.
Whether you’re racing hard up hills or on a long steady adventure, the Thorpe manages sweat and regulates heat so you don’t overheat on climbs or freeze when you stop.
What design features make it trail ready?
Based on feedback from the Harrier community, the Thorpe includes:
-
YKK® half-zip for fast venting.
-
Flatlocked seams for comfort.
-
Thumb loops & fold-over hand mitts to trap warmth and stop sleeves riding up.
-
Body-mapped cut for men and women, giving superior fit and movement.
-
Naturally odor-resistant & itch-free Merino blend.
Is this just for elite runners?
Not at all. The Thorpe is built for every runner—front, middle, or back of the pack. In fact, those out on the trails longest often benefit most from kit that keeps them warm, dry, and comfortable hour after hour.
Why is a baselayer so important?
It’s the foundation of your layering system. A good baselayer manages sweat, stays warm when wet, and reduces faff so you can focus on running. Poor choices (like cotton) lead to wet fabric, heat loss, and chafing. The Thorpe gives you flexibility—keeping you comfortable across a wide range of conditions.
How do I care for my Merino-TENCEL™ baselayer?
-
Wash: Delicate/wool cycle, cool water (30°C), with wool detergent (we recommend Grangers Merino Wash).
-
Avoid: Fabric softeners, bleach, or harsh detergents.
-
Dry: Lay flat or on a rack, out of direct sunlight. Avoid tumble drying (unless label allows on low).
-
Extra tips: Wash inside out to reduce pilling. Rinse stains promptly. Store in a cool, dry place.
