Key Resources For Fell Runners
Some key training and skills resources as recommended by Dave in the session.
7 Key Strength Moves
Step ups / downs (pictured)
Try these twice a week with body weight to start. When technique is good you can increase to heavier weights but less reps i.e. 8 reps x 2
Eccentric Strength Training
An eccentric contraction is the motion of an active muscle while it is lengthening under load.
Find a step / ledge and run a short circuit round then land on right leg. Repeat 8 times. Do same with other side 8 times.
Repeat going up the step / ledge.
This will help a lot with down and uphill strength and control.
The easiest way to get started with fell running is to join a club. That way you don't need to worry about getting lost and you will have support from experienced runners. Many clubs have beginner or slower groups, contact them and see what they say. Many road running clubs also have spin off trail and fell groups.
You can also sign up to races or events. As a rule of thumb, as a beginner, stick to short and moderately hilly events in the spring and summer. CS and BS category races are a great starting point as they are less than 10km, the hills aren't too big and you probably won't need to navigate. You can learn more about race categories below.
I signed up with the wonderful Pennine Fell Runners and a couple of months later did my first race. The Wolf's Pit, 9km, 450m ascent. It was an AS category - short and very hilly but a lot of fun!

Independent Gear Reviews
I’ve used Harrier run free approx 4 times now and every time I’ve received great service, I struggled to find what I was looking for this time so used the live chat option and received immediate assistance to help me find what I was looking for.
I’ve purchased the Kinder 10L vest, dry bag and soft flasks, all of which are fantastic! Highly recommend each of these products, define value for money!
Absolute top quality products, well designed and well made, all for a snip of the price of the "big" names. I have followed Harrier since start up and am so impressed with all the work that has gone into product development, testing and production. I also highly rate Harrier customer service.
I LOVE my Harrier Curbar race vest. It's comfortable, capable and cavernous! One of the best pieces of kit I have bought in a long time.
The 5L race vest is comfortable and works really well for me - I've had a bit of trouble with other more expensive brands with the packs riding up as I am relatively narrow-chested. It feels pretty robust and has lots of pockets and storage and probably more than I will need. I went for the full works with first aid kit, flasks, survival bag, straws etc etc in an inclusive package and for the first time with this sort of purchase did not feel ripped off and actually enjoy wearing it.
...and I love the packaging...is Harrier becoming the Apple of running gear?(apart from the price obviously!)
Ordered and received my Classic cap and Thorpe Ultra tee today. Very quick and efficient ordering service and delivery. Delivered in a convenient box that works really well. The 2 products are excellent and great quality and lovely to run in. Kate works really hard to ensure quality items are always at hand. Thanks again.
Fantastic! I had trouble with sizing and the help and advice I received was outstanding, far above and beyond anything I've received from another shop or brand. So if you're having sizing trouble just ask! The vest itself is great too, well made from quality materials and the perfect array of pockets.
The Kinder vest is a very well thought out piece of kit and excellent value. I bought the beginner bundle and very pleased with it. The vest is very comfortable and well finished, The inclusion of a couple of sterilising tablets for the soft flasks was most welcome to rid the flasks of that plasticky taste. I was impressed by the ability of the flasks to seal and not leak as my previous ones never sealed properly. Delivery was very quick and packaging was kept to a minimum. I'm still trying to figure out how it came so neatly packed!
Please give Harrier a try as their gear appears to be such VFM and support a small Company. WELL DONE HARRIER
I had questions around sizing for the Kinder race vest and they were dealt with quickly and efficiently..... and accurately (it’s a great fit)! The bundle arrived well packaged and quickly and all of the items were exactly as ordered. What’s not to like?! BI will definitely be shopping Harrier again. Thank you
